Sammy & Sunniva — A Fine-Art Wedding in the Algarve

There's a particular quality to the light in the Algarve in late spring — long, low and golden, the kind that turns an ordinary evening into something you want to hold on to. Sammy and Sunniva's wedding was made of exactly that light, and of the unhurried Portuguese pace that lets a day breathe.

It began in a whitewashed village of blue shutters and sun-warmed stone — the morning slow and full of anticipation, the small quiet rituals of getting ready that so often hold the truest feeling of the day.

As the afternoon softened, the celebration moved outside. There were pale horses at dusk, a bride in liquid silk, and a couple so wrapped up in one another that the camera all but disappeared — which is exactly how I like to work. I don't stage a wedding so much as follow it, gathering the art of the day quietly from its edges.

Some of my favourite frames from the day were made on film. There's an honesty to it — the grain, the softness, colours that fall the way memory does — that suits a celebration like this one better than anything digital can manage. It's slower and less forgiving, and completely worth it.

The Algarve is quietly becoming one of Europe's most beautiful places to marry: dramatic coastline, honeyed light, extraordinary food and wine, and a sense of space that lets a wedding feel like a proper escape rather than a schedule to keep.
